Q: Is Dax your real name?

A: Yes, Dax is my real first name. Justin is my middle name and I decided to use my middle name in place of my last since my last name is hard to spell and pronounce.

Q: Where are you from?

A: I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and when I’m not in the field I spend time back home in Calgary.

Q: How long have you been taking photos and what got you started as a photographer?

A: I’ve been taking photos for 3 years; but I didn’t exactly “decide” to start taking photos. I actually used to be the guy who was annoyed when people would ask me to take their photos with their smartphones… Then one day something changed. On December 26th, 2013 I woke up very early in the morning, got dressed up in outdoor gear I had since 2009 (that still had the tags on them) and felt compelled to go into the wilderness. That day was my awakening, it felt very out-of-body and it was as if I saw nature for the very first time. Things looked different. I started taking pictures at that moment and posted them on Instagram for the first time.

Q: What was your career before you became a professional photographer?

A: Prior to photography I was a Branding and Design Consultant and Creative Director. I worked on developing and refining brand identities and brand communications for small and large clients. I did this for about 10 years and in that time I worked freelance, for/with advertising agencies, with individuals/artists, startups, and non-profits. I still take on branding work selectively, but exploring and expeditions are taking most of my time these days. You can see some of my branding work here.

Q: What types of software or apps do you use to edit and process your photographs?

A: For software on my computer I use Adobe Creative Cloud, specifically Photoshop and Lightroom. While on the road I use mobile apps Photoshop Touch, Lightroom (for Android), and the Snapseed App.
